The Starglider Class EnergyMech is based on polygons original EnergyMech, version 2.0.3. The changes began some time in the spring of 1997 and countless modifications has been done since then. Everything from reformatting the code to adding whole new sections (like linking). The original v2.0.3 EnergyMech couldn't stay online for longer than 24 hours, it always crashed at 4 AM in the morning due to a bug in the daily update code. This was remedied early in the Starglider Class. Other major bugs were also found and eliminated. During this process, the goal has always been to make a smaller, more efficient, faster, easier and more stable program. Version 2.1.10 holds the current uptime record, running for a whopping 156 days, until the bot was killed for a reboot of the shell server it was running on. Today, the Starglider is the only (known) version of the EnergyMech still around. Due to the fact that only one person is involved in the development of the EnergyMech, updates aren't as common and as regular as with the eggdrop bot (which has a whole team of programmers working on it). However, the EnergyMech keeps gaining in popularity. It is believed that the Starglider Class EnergyMech is the second most common bot on IRC networks (the most common being the eggdrop). Development of the Starglider Class EnergyMech has been the work of proton. Most coding and testing has been conducted on his home machine, running Slackware Linux. | |||
